Kerala: Call to make fisheries station functional June 07,2019   |  Source: The Times of India

Fishermen and the boat owners' organizations in Kasaragod have demanded that the fisheries station in the district, which has not become functional even after completion of the civil works, should be commissioned at the earliest by creating new posts in the fisheries department to facilitate the functioning.

Speaking at the official meeting in connection with the trawling ban at Kasaragod collectorate on Saturday, they said a fisheries station was essential to ensure protection to the life and belongings of the fishermen during monsoon and trawling ban.

Though the infrastructure is ready, the issue is the lack of manpower, and hence the inauguration has been kept on hold, according to fisheries deputy director K Ajitha. At the same time, during the southwest monsoon season, effective steps would be initiated to ensure the safety of the fishermen and their vessels apart from ensuring the trawling ban, beginning on June 9, is strictly implemented, the officials said. A round-the-clock control room has already been opened in the fisheries deputy director's office in Kanhangad.
