Traditional fisherfolk owing allegiance to the Ramanathapuram Fishermen Trade Union (RFTU) staged a protest at the Collectorate here on Monday against installation of buoys and introduction of eco-tourism with glass bottom boat in Gulf of Mannar (GoM) Marine National Park. Led by RFTU president A. Palsamy, representatives of fishermen and fisherwomen from the coastal villages of Erwadi to Chinnapalam, presented a petition to Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao, stating that they faced threat to their livelihood and urged him to stop the project and remove the already installed buoys. They had been eking out a living by fishing in GoM using ‘vathai’ (small boats) and collecting seaweed. While men eked out a living by fishing around the islands in GoM, women supplemented family income by collecting seaweed around the island.

Mr. Palsamy said the fisherfolk had been fishing and collecting seaweed in GoM for several years but caused no harm to the biosphere reserve. While collecting seaweed, the women ensured no harm to the coral reefs, he said. Though forest department officials claimed that buoys were being installed only to demark the eco-tourism zone, he said after installing the buoys, the officials would prevent the fishermen from entering the zone and go anyway near the
