Tamil Nadu: Fishers stranded in Gujarat, Maha seek amenities, diesel November 08,2019   |  Source: The Times of India

Fishermen from Thoothoor in Kanyakumari district who reached the nearest shores in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka following warning given to them before Cyclone Kyarr (from October 18) and are waiting for the rough weather to calm down have started sharing videos claiming that they are struggling without basic amenities.

In one of the videos, fishermen Rajan and Jerickson of Thoothoor claimed that no official has met them and listened to their grievances or provided any basic amenities. They added that hundreds of fishermen from Kanyakumari are with them in Gujarat. They also appealed to the government to provide them diesel to go fishing or return home as they had spent heavily on fuel to reach the shores. A fisheries department official said that they have coordinated with their counterparts in the west coast to provide basic amenities to the fishermen. “But we cannot fulfil their unjust demands,” the official said. He said that most boats reached the shore before the impact of the gale and it was much earlier than their scheduled return from fishing.

Pointing out that the boats go deep sea fishing for a period of up to 40 days, the official said the fishermen set off to the sea with food for all the crew till they return to the shore and with diesel
