Sri Lanka: Ten arrested for engaging in illegal fishing November 12,2019   |  Source: Daily News LK

Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 10 persons who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets, in the seas off Elizabeth island Trincomalee. Accordingly, these persons who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets were apprehended during patrol carried out by Eastern naval Command in the seas off Elizabeth island Trincomalee.

The apprehended persons are residents of Kinniya area aged between 31 to 46. A dinghy, 225m long banned net, an OBM and other fishing gears were also taken into Naval custody. The suspects along with the apprehended items were handed over to Assistant Director of Fisheries -Trincomalee for onward action. Marine resources are harmed by illegal means of fishing in this nature and Navy is always on alert to turn away these activities to preserve fish and other maritime resources for future.
