Gujarat: GEMINI to keep Veraval fishermen updated even in midsea November 25,2019   |  Source: The Times of India

Fishermen in Veraval coast, India’s largest fish-producing centre, will now get weather bulletins, including warning on inclemencies, even in mid sea. This will be made possible by GEMINI, (GAGAN Enabled Mariner’s Instrument for Navigation and Information), a device developed by the Hyderabad-based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), an autonomous body under the union ministry of earth sciences (MoES). For this purpose, INCOIS has joined hands with the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to utilize its GAGAN satellite which covers the entire Indian Ocean round-the-clock.

GEMINI will also communicate information about potential fishing zones (PFZ) and ocean states forecast (OSF) to the fishermen. ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology in association with INCOIS held a seminar for fishermen in Veraval and Diu from November 11 to 13 to give them information about how this device works and will prove useful in their daily activities. “This is the satellite-based communication system which is used to disseminate emergency information like cyclones, high waves, and tsunamis,” explained Dr Nimit Kumar, scientist, INCOIS Hyderabad.
