Maldives: IPNLF signs five-year MoU with Maldives tuna processors, exporters November 27,2019   |  Source: Undercurrent News

The International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maldives Seafood Processors and Exporters Association (MSPEA) to define long-term objectives on joint sustainability initiatives related to the one-by-one tuna fishery industry. The five-year-agreement, ratified in the Maldives, establishes that both groups will, among other things, work to improve fishery data collection, educate fishermen on the best livebait fishing methods, and facilitate bycatch and catch monitoring through the use of an observer program.

The two groups also want to implement new technologies and tools to improve the traceability and transparency of one-by-one tuna harvests. They have agreed to share office facilities in Malé. The initiative aims to improve the livelihoods of communities connected to the fisheries, and ensure that the Maldives "remains at the forefront of the global one-by-one tuna supply", the two organizations said in a press release. “The Maldives is widely considered the home of pole-and-line tuna, and so the signing of this MoU is a very important step for all those connected locally and internationally to these fisheries," said Martin Purves, IPNLF's managing director, in a statement.
