Karnataka: Fish transporters to go on 24-hour-long strike on December 12 December 05,2019   |  Source: The Times of India

Mangaluru Dakke Meenu Lorry Chalakara Sangha, affiliated to CITU will stage a 24-hour-long strike seeking proper arrangements for fish transporting lorries discharge the waste without attracting legal action, starting 12am on December 12. More than 1000 such lorries that transport edible fish in the coastal districts of Udupi, DK and Uttara Kannada will be part of the strike, Vasanth Achary, vice-president, district unit of CITU, said.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Achary said the sangha has been representing this issue to respective district administrations since 2013 without any concrete solutions coming forth. “Each of these lorries that transport edible grade fish contains a 400-litre capacity wastewater tank that needs to be emptied at some point during the transport journey without causing any problem to other road users and to the local environment,” Achary said.

This problem is faced by the lorries that originate in Uttara Kannada district passing through NH-66 towards Kerala, he said the ice to keep the fish catch fresh, melts in the process of the journey and starts overflowing the tank. “We are open to suggestions that administration may have regarding this,” he said, adding in neighbouring Kerala, government there has permitted these lorries to
