India: Centre to strive for making India top producer of seafood February 11,2020   |  Source: Economic Times

The Centres will work together with all the stakeholders including the state governments to make India the primary producer of seafood globally from the fourth position it is occupying now Addressing the 22nd Indian International Seafood Show that concluded here on Sunday, minister of state for commerce and industry Som Parkash said in view of the economic slowdown, there was need for working hard for achieving various targets set by the seafood industry. "Whatever problems you have, the government is ready to address them," he assured the delegates. He asked Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) to prepare and submit a memorandum, listing the sector's requirements.

Earlier, the Indian seafood industry has called for a series of measures from the Centre to propel the export from the current level of Rs 50,000 crore to Rs l lakh crore in another five years. The Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) national president Jagdish V Fofandi said the share of traditional markets of European Union and Japan has gone down in the India’s export basket. "In Europe, India’s consignments are subjected to more tests than for that of the some of the competitors.." Though US is the largest buyer of aquaculture shrimp, it has banned sea-caught shrimps from India,
