Manipur: NPSSFW(I) protests against Loktak Inland Waterways Project March 03,2020   |  Source: DMF

The Government of India in the Ministry of Shipping has approved an Inland Waterways Project in the Loktak lake of Manipur. The lake, a Ramsar site, is the life line of Manipur. It provides livelihood to more than 50,000 fishers and many more in the downstream. The lake is unique. It has the world's only floating national park. The lake is already under severe pressure because of a hydel power plant and Ithai dam. The government did not care to consult the fisher people, let alone taking their consent before sanctioning the project. National Platform for Small Scale Fish Workers (Inland) demands cancellation of the project.
