Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology has forecast strong winds up to 70 kilometers per hour in speed in the shallow and deep sea areas near Galle and Hambantota. Local fishing communities have been warned of the dangers of venturing out to sea in such conditions. The Met Department said wind speeds can increase up to 60-70 kilometers per hour in the deep and shallow sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota from 2.30 pm Monday (19) to 2.30pm the next day. “Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in other sea areas around the island,” the department said. “Sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota can be very rough at times. Other sea areas around the island can also be rough,” it said. Met Department has requested fishing and naval communities in the aforementioned areas to be vigilant regarding changes in wind speed.
