The Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) has granted Rs. 4.22 crore to East Godavari district for protecting the fishermen hamlets along the seacoast from natural calamities. The district administration is making arrangements to spend the amount towards construction of Individual Sanitary Latrines (ISL) in those hamlets.

Loans to SHGs

Collector Kartikeya Misra said in a video conference with the district officials on Tuesday that the grant would be disbursed to all the 133 Grama Samakhyas spread in 12 mandals and each Samakhya would get Rs. 3.18 lakh. “The Samakhyas will provide loans to the members of the fishermen SHGs and the fishermen will be guided to spend the first tranche of loans towards the construction of ISLs,” Mr. Misra said, adding that it would help ensure sanitation in the hamlets.

Special accounts

The Collector advised the Grama Samakhyas to maintain a special account of loans issued towards the construction of the individual toilets, as the same would be repaid once the government released the cost of construction to the beneficiaries.
